Stop Whitehaven Coal

Whitehaven Coal, Australia's most controversial resources company, is seeking (through one of the companies it owns) approval for a new coal mine - Winchester South in the Bowen Basin. This mega-mine poses significant threats to our region, environment and climate. Safeguarding our water, farmland, native habitats, and climate should be top priorities for our government.

If approved, this mine is projected:

To be one of Australia’s biggest proposed coal projects.
To release more emissions than Australia’s entire annual emissions
To run the risk of draining Queensland’s groundwater resources
To clear thousands of hectares of koala, greater glider and other endangered species’ habitat

This mine is completely contradictory to Australia’s target to reduce emissions by 42% by 2035. The decision to approve or reject this coal mine is likely to rest with the Federal Environment Minister, Murray Watt. We are calling on the Minister to protect the people and places that we love and reject the Winchester South mega coal mine.

To the Hon Murray Watt, Minister for the Environment,

I am calling on you to protect our environment and communities from Whitehaven WS’s proposed Winchester South coal project in Central Queensland. This mega-mine will have significant impacts on Queensland's water, our threatened species and the unnatural extreme weather events caused by its carbon pollution will adversely impact the health of our community.
 
Climate science states that we cannot risk opening or expanding any coal mines if we want a safe and livable future. 
 
The Queensland Government has not listened to community concerns about the impacts of this project and has given their initial approval for this huge polluting coal mine. The Queensland Government has left the protection of our precious environment with you to decide.
 
So, again I call on you in your role as Australia’s Environment Minister to say NO to this coal mine proposal on the basis that:
 
●      Climate Change: On Whitehaven’s own estimates, the project will release over 557 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – this is more than the entire annual GHG emissions of Australia reported last year
●      Habitat Destruction: The Winchester South mine would result in the destruction of  up to 2000ha of vital habitat for the koala and the greater glider, both of which are already endangered species.
●      Water impact: The Isaac River, which flows into the Great Barrier Reef, is already under substantial stress from mining activities. Whitehaven WS’s proposal seeks to add more untreated water into the river, endangering our natural environment.
●      Environmental track record: Whitehaven WS Pty Ltd is wholly owned by Whitehaven Coal.  Whitehaven Coal's history of flouting environmental laws in Australia, including a conviction for water theft in New South Wales, raises serious doubts about their commitment to environmental compliance.
 
Please take-on your responsibility as Environment Minister, stand by your Government’s commitment of no further extinctions of wildlife species and refuse the proposed Winchester South coal mine.
